The new Shire Horse Centre at The Children’s Farm was opened this year. This purpose built stable yard is a great place to interact with these magnificent animals. Visitors can see the horses close up in their stables as well as watch them graze leisurely in the adjacent paddock. |
Grandparents, parents and children alike are in awe of the latest arrivals. The farm owners’ family tradition is continuing with the arrival of two new Shire mares and foals, including the still gangly Bromford Lady Diana, born in late June in front of delighted farm visitors. |

The family history of Shire horse breeding has its roots in the well known Midlands haulage company, Rawlins Bros (B’ham) Ltd. Through the last century they used Shires, helping construct Birmingham’s roads, buildings and canals. Bob Rawlins, the Children’s Farm owner, grew up working with these magnificent animals. His expertise and love for them has brought a piece of Midlands’ heritage back to life. |
The Shire Horses are especially popular for the older generation, a reminder of times when they were a common sight on the streets and fields of the Midlands. After visiting with their grandchildren they will often slip back on a weekday afternoon for a quiet cup of tea and a wander around the animals. |
